On July 24th, 2018, the University of Maryland’s Vice President for Administration and Finance, Mr. Carlo Colella, publicly released a repurposing proposal for the Golf Course. During the next five months the Maryland Golf Course Coalition (MGCC) actively opposed this proposal.
On behalf of the MGCC, I want to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to those who took the time to sign our online petition, write letters or send emails to, or call University administrators expressing your viewpoint about the proposal.
Our collective efforts, in concert with those of local political, community, and environmental leaders, proved effective as evidenced by actions taken by the University’s Facilities Council at a meeting on December 14th, 2018. This meeting, which was not open to the public, was Chaired by the University’s Provost, Dr. Mary Ann Rankin.
The following significant outcomes of this meeting have been made known.
An action item on the agenda requesting approval to endorse further study of the repurposing proposal was not voted on. The Chair and other members of the Facilities Council posed numerous questions to the Vice President of Administration and Finance and his Facilities Planning staff. As a result of these interactions the presenters were directed by the Chair to come back to a future Facilities Council meeting (no date was set for this) with a better thought out proposal for what a study should look like and one that addressed many of the questions that were asked.
Based on the above outcome of this meeting, for now, the repurposing proposal as originally proposed has not been accepted and the schedule for further consideration by the Facilities Council has not yet been determined.
I can assure you that the MGCC’s wide network of Golf Course stakeholders stand ready to once again oppose any future repurposing proposal that threatens the 150 acres of treasured green-space known to us as the championship caliber, eighteen hole University of Maryland Golf Course.
I thank you for your continued active involvement in such efforts and extend my best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2019!
Chair, Maryland Golf Course Coalition (MGCC)
